I was doing a gig and a young lady in the club was wearing a tshirt with a picture of Merle Haggard on it. When I took a break, she commented, she liked my Merle Haggard covers i performed and I told her I liked her tshirt. After I walked away, I thought, hmmmm, HAGGARD ON MY T-SHIRT.

I was going through a divorce at the time. My wife, soon to be ex-wife always loved Mexico and had been to Cobo many, many times before we were married. She decided to take another trip Mexico during our divorce and upon leaving for her trip, she again reminded me how much she loved Mexico and I said yeah maybe you'd love me still IF I WAS MEXICO. The song was born.

My grandfather co-wrote a song with Hank Williams Sr. that was recorded the same session as "Cold Cold Heart." He never achieved great success but, still more than I have to date. Some of my earliest memories of him were of him trying to get other cuts after Hank died and Nashville moved on. Friends of mine have tried Nashville and have been disappointed. This song was kind of written in their honor, based on my visits to Nashville over the years.
