About This Song

This song is a straight up, country drinking and breakup song. I wrote it trying to put a twist on the fact to whiskey (or alcohol in general) won't put out a fire... even one in your heart. I also threw in a nod to George Strait and his song "The Fireman" since he talks about putting out old flames.

Would love to hear what you guys think.

I like this!
Only thing that I might rework if it was mine is the second pre chorus. Either match the first or rework it.

DeeDee, yeah that second pre-chorus is a bit clunky.  I’ll have to work on it.
Thanks!

Whiskey won’t drown an...

Written by David Jagge

Verse 1
Buddy, I’ve sat where you’re sitting
With a long face and an empty glass
Thinking Jim, Jack, or José
Could make a good thing out of bad
But a broken heart and eighty proof
Ain’t exactly OSHA-safe
You can lose a little memory
Or blow-up the whole thing in your face

Pre-Chorus
When a heart’s on fire
It don’t take much to know
What burns going down
Ain’t gonna cool the glow

Chorus
George told us ’bout the fireman
Putting out old flames
But he never said that whiskey
Would only make ’em blaze
You can’t drown a fire with alcohol
That ain’t how fire behaves
No, whiskey won’t drown an old flame
But it helps with the memory some days

Verse 2
You’ll start out drinking to forget her
Then forget you shouldn’t call
Leave a message ’round eleven
You won’t remember much at all
By midnight you’ll be telling strangers
She was crazy anyway
By last call you’ll be crying
To a jukebox playing Strait

Pre-Chorus
You don’t have to be a fireman
Or wear a helmet on your head
To know pouring booze on something burning
Usually means you'll lose

Chorus
George told us ’bout the fireman
Putting out old flames
But he never said that whiskey
Would only make ’em blaze
You can’t drown a fire with alcohol
That ain’t how fire behaves
No, whiskey won’t drown an old flame
But it helps with the memory some days

Bridge
It won’t turn sparks to ashes
It won’t make her disappear
But it might make you quit talking ’bout her
For five whole minutes here
So raise one up for common sense
Then ignore it anyway
It won’t do much for the fire
But it helps with the memory some days

Final Chorus
George told us ’bout the fireman
Putting out old flames
But he never said that whiskey
Would only make ’em blaze
You can’t drown a fire with alcohol
It’ll blow up in your face
No, whiskey won’t drown an old flame
But it helps with the memory some days

Outro
Yeah, what burns going down
Ain’t gonna cool the glow
But pour me one more, bartender
Just in case George didn’t know
