Once again, it’s humbling to read your lyrics, Brent. It’s a reminder of how much I still have to learn, and how high the bar is, but I appreciate you posting your songs for us all to try to learn from… Just reading the lyrics to this song (no music), I was a little surprised at first to see Johnny Cash referenced in a Christian lyric, considering his life of adultery, drug abuse, etc, but then I realized that I kind of like that Johnny Cash is there in your song. Jesus hates the sin, not the sinner, right? Isn’t that how the saying goes? I’m no historian, but I think he was a heckuva sinner in his early days, then lived a more Christian lifestyle as he got older. That’s kind of a real life story for a LOT of people. Anyway, it caught me off guard at first, but I love it… Love that line about your grandson testifying that Jesus saved his soul. That second verse is really strong… Thanks for posting.

I’d LOVE to hear the Oaks sing this one (or any of mine), Mitch!  Legends!

Rick, yes, Cash was a real hell-raiser in his younger days.  But he came around to become a devout Christian.  So I have no doubt he’s with the Father right now. By the way, it’s on my post-bucket list to write a song with Cash in Heaven…

The Bible doesn’t give us a heavenly itinerary, so I can see where this just might be a nice afternoon in heaven.

One Afternoon In Heaven

Written by Brent Baxter

(Donna King, Zane King, Brent Baxter)

One afternoon in Heaven
Maybe a thousand years from now
I’ll have some friends and family over
Saints just hanging out
My folks’ll show up early
To that place prepared for me
Dad’ll wonder what’s for dinner
And Mom’ll kiss me on the cheek

CHORUS
And we’ll all praise the Lord together
We’ll lift our voices up
We’ll tell our endless stories
Of the glory of His love
And It’ll be even better
Than I dream about today
One afternoon in Heaven
Heaven knows, I can hardly wait

One afternoon in Heaven
Down that little golden road
My grandson's gonna testify
How Jesus saved his soul
Johnny Cash will bring a song he wrote
About the face of God
Billy Graham will nod and say “Amen”
And all of us will sing along

CHORUS

We can sit and talk and laugh
Just as long as we like
The sun ain’t going down
There’s no clock keepin’ time

CHORUS

One afternoon in Heaven
Heaven knows, I can hardly wait
