Six Strings And A

No, this is NOT about Taylor Swift. It's dedicated to another female guitarist/singer out there that deserves the same kind of recognition.

Gospel Groupie

Based on a true story at a recent King James Boys show. I never got her name, but hopefully she'll hear this song some day.

Valerie Brown From Mallorytown

I saw the name of the town on a map, it had a musical ring to it, so I decided to write a song around it. As I was writing, I imagined Charlie Waller and the Country Gentlemen performing it.

Annalise

I used to work with a young lady who walked really fast, and that became the inspiration for this "Jimmy Martin meets Chuck Berry" song. Please forgive me for the hack fiddle playing, I am still a beginner on the instrument and I just wanted to fill in some empty spots real fast.

Rain Again

Back in the late 1990s, I was in a female-fronted alt-country/Americana band. No one else in the band wrote songs, so it was delegated to me, and it challenged me to write songs from a female perspective. This was one of my better ones.

Fine Upstanding Man

Written and recorded about a decade ago with my old band Gravel Train, it is still one of my personal favorites.

Something About A Train

This is the song that won the Chris Austin Songwriting Contest at Merlefest in 2015 (Bluegrass Category). Co-written with Dawn Kenney and David Morris, this demo is recorded by Troy Engle. It was recorded by Valerie Smith & Liberty Pike on her 2017 release "Small Town Heroes," and was Number 1 on a number of roots-music charts.
