About This Song

I've always enjoyed writing ballads. "Goodbye" travels from quiet reflection and embarks on a slow build to an emotional climax that will hopefully tug on the hearts of listeners.

I think you really accomplished your goal. The build from an almost too slow ballad to a really moving, melodic song is very cool. I think your melody, lyric, and groove really complement each other (as good music should). It’s funny because at the start, I thought: ” this is going to be one of those slow, ponderous ballads”. Was I wrong. It quickly built into a very neat song that I wanted to hear again.

Andrew, You nailed this. All of the subtle instruments, and your lyrics kept me engaged through the whole song. Like Dick said, I started thinking this is kind of slow, but the way you layered the song you kept me engaged especially as the song builds. Then to just slow it down at the end again is really great. I’m really interested in others thoughts on this.

Awesome song. I love the haunting, emotional melody of “Everything said / everything lost.” I wanted so much to hear it repeated in the second line. The first lines of each verse are perfect, but the second ones seem long - until you get to the last one “rhythm saved only for you.” In that spot it makes a great variation to lead into the chorus.

Every conversation playing out like we're masters of chess
I capture your knight then you'd leave with the king when the morning came

Treating our time like the big hand can't ever touch the little
cuz every time that I try, your little hands are tightly holding something else

Everything said
was it ever true?
did you let me choose?
Everything lost
you were over me
now I'm over you

You turn bye into goodbye

You took such care to cross your T's and dot your I's
and when you looked into mine I could see you were looking right back at yourself

Holding our cards, beat my heart with a trump from a club
you were beating it up even as it would beat on a rhythm saved only for you

Everything said
was it ever true?
did you let me choose?
Everything lost
you were over me
now I'm over you

You turn bye into goodbye
the final farewell made it all well

I'm done waiting
waiting
waiting for you
