About This Song

written by Jack Speer, produced by Tre' Corely (Oak Tree Studios), sung by Gus Gashus

My dad was very proud of my early endeavors, but he was extremely disappointed as a result of some life changing choices I made. As a result, we rode down a bumpy road together for a few years. However, things came together before the end of his life and I couldn’t have been more proud to have been his son. As I walked out of the church following his funeral service, a close, life-long friend approached me and said, “You have so many of your father’s knee-jerk mannerisms. In fact, the way you walk and the way you talk; it’s so much like him.” Nothing could have pleased me more, thus the title of this song.

Thank you, Earla DeCoursey, that means a lot as it’s one of my earliest songs while battling a deep depression over losing my dad.  I plan to re-write it, as it needs a bridge.  Again, many thanks for your kind words!

Hi Jack,
love this songs, reminds me to my own story. It may be a good idea to re-write. I think it has some more potential. I really love the first part of the chorus, but the second part is not as good as the first part, especially the way the hook line ends. I also would add a very short bridge and repeat the chorus once again, the chorus melody is really strong! Good luck!

A very nice song. The one suggestion that I might make (an issue that a lot of us who write songs have) is “get rid of the unnecessary small words.” As an example, instead of “It’s as though it was rehearsed,” you might want to think about “As if it was reheared”—in other words, edit not only the big stuff (cohesive moving story, rhyme schemes and internal meter in lines), but also the “small verbiage” (unnecessary small syllables/words). Anyway, hope that makes sense. I DO think you write some very nice songs (for instance, “God Only Knows” absolutely knocked me out the first time I heard it). Keep writing songs, and best wishes for all your songwriting endeavors!!!

KNEE-JERK THINGS

Written by Jack Speer

He taught me how to run
And he taught me how to swim,
In fact, the way I walk and the way I talk,
They say it’s a lot like him.

As I grew up in his home
And he had me tow the line,
I swore, “I’ll do things differently,
If I have a son of mine!”

But, as years have come and gone
And whether he was right or wrong,
I cling to every memory,
Of the man I came from.

And though it happened very near the end,
My foe became my closest friend
And the best of all his legacy
Are the knee-jerk things I share with him.

Now the roles have be reversed,
As my son receives the curse,
The déjà vu of what we go through;
It’s as though it was rehearsed.

And as years have come and gone
And whether he was right or wrong,
I cling to every memory,
Of the man I came from.

And I pray before the end,
My son will see me as his closest friend
And won’t regret my legacy
Of knee-jerk things I’ve left with him.
