Kind of a quasi bluegrass piece about a living family "heirloom" that embodies multi generational values.
As usual, just general whatever.
I love the idea, and I love the line “must be something romantic in those leaves”
I did get sidetracked by “JLH loves GRP” as I was busy trying to figure out who that might be, which pulled me out of things a little… it felt a bit like an in-joke, that only few people would know who it was ![]()
I’m wondering if, unless it’s obvious who it is (the singer’s initials and their spouse for instance), perhaps something less specific could go there? Just off the top of my head, “A catalogue of love for all to see” or something?
And of course, maybe nobody else had their brain suddenly decide to try and figure out what names might go into those initials, and it was just me ![]()

FAMILY TREE
Out near a prairie farmhouse stands a giant old oak tree
Great Grand Dad planted after the Civil War
It’s been a family refuge and a gathering place
Connecting us to those who’ve gone before
It’s where Grandpa married Grandma on a clear blue April day
With daffodils growing everywhere
There’ve been so many picnics with homemade rhubarb jam
Roots of life are still growing there
It’s standing like a sturdy Rock of Ages
Preserving every moment that it sees
There must be at least a million memories
Underneath our FAMILY TREE
I remember riding that tractor tire swing
I’d ride that tire until the day was done
Each passing generation’s seen its branches multiply
A common thread that links us all as one
CH
Lovers carved their initials upon its rugged bark
Ones like “JLH loves GRP”
I have to confess I stole a kiss or two
Must be something romantic in those leaves

Hi Richard - I nice idea - my family doesn’t have anything like a family tree, but I can relate totally.
A fiddle would be a good fit if you consider to make a full band demo. I like this song! Good luck!
