Written while driving back through the Catskill mountains after attending the first Steve Earle "Camp Copperhead" songwriting course. Went for a kind of Dylan-ish feel to it. It's about being ok with being "small" in life.

I am just a footsoldier, no general no king,
And when I fall in battle, there'll be no songs to sing,
No ballads of my bravery, no tales of my great deeds,
I turned up, and played my part, and now I quietly leave.
Oh the back row major pieces think that they control this game,
But every pawn upon the board is important just the same,
For every one that stands their ground, and every one that falls,
I give my thanks they did their best in answering the call.
And it's ok,
We'll be rewarded one day.
Oh it's ok,
We'll be rewarded one day.
We are all just footsoldiers, forever rank and file,
No medals pinned upon our chests to recognize our toil,
Heads bowed down we march along in service all our days,
To the hopes and dreams, the wants and fears, of the mighty and great.
And it's ok,
We'll be rewarded one day.
It's all ok,
We'll be rewarded one day.
