Story of loss and making the most of the time we have. I lost my Father and Brother a few years apart. Both were Veterans. I also wrote this as my daughter went off to college.

VERSE 1
My pawpaw raised me
I shadowed where he went
At his brother’s funeral
We sat down on a bench
I heard the scraping shovels
As red dirt filled the grave
He shared lessons bout wasting time
I live by them today
CHORUS
Quit counting the days
Make your days count
Quit counting your money
Every dead man leaves
With the same amount
You can count your friends
Can they count on you
One day you’ll be
Laid in a grave
Who’s showing up for you
Make your days count
VERSE 2
Now a lifetime later
And my pawpaw’s long gone
I see the flag draped pinebox
Jesus called my best friend home
Shared foxhole promises
Prayed for each other
Friendship forged in life and war
I’ll miss my favorite brother
CHORUS
Quit counting the days
Make your days count
Quit counting your money
Every dead man leaves
With the same amount
You can count your friends
Can they count on you
One day you’ll be
Laid in a grave
Who’s showing up for you
Make your days count
BRIDGE
Nights are long and painful
War memories attack
Enduring Freedom never
Gave his freedom back
Always had my six
Right up to the end
Always soldiering on
More worried about me than him
VERSE 3
Sitting on a jon boat bench
Sun slides away
Watching my daughter cast her line
I think I’ll count today
Graveyard lessons
Engraved on my mind
I still don’t have much money to count
But I’m not leaving days behind
[Chorus]
Quit counting the days
Go Make your days count!
