I think you can improve the chorus some by giving a bit more even though it may be embellishing the real story.

Can you decide what you mean by “more”? More details, color, word play?

Even if the chorus is verbatim what he said, Im thinking that a bit more explanation of why MI roads are hard. How does it take him away. What makes his back sore. Either elaborate on those or change it up a bit about the necessity of leaving.

[Verse 1]
When I was a baby
My father left home
He drove a black Mack truck
And was always alone
But when I got older
He bring me along
I wished to be like him
and With him year long

[Verse 2]
The summers were short
And the winters were long
My time with daddy
Would soon be gone
I'd wait at the back door
To watch him leave
I fought back the tears while
He said this to me

[Chorus]
Michigan roads are
As hard as can be
They'll take you away from
Your family
But a man has to do what
God had in store
Provide for his family
Though his back is sore

[Bridge]
So today when a big rig goes crawling by
the smell and the sounds make me sigh
and I go back to that place and time
And I pass the wisdom on down the road
To my three little kids I got here at home
And daddy's words
Have now become my own

[Chorus]
Michigan roads are
As hard as can be
They'll take you away from
Your family
But a man has to do what
God had in store
Provide for his family
Though his back is sore
Provide for his family
Though his back is sore
Provide for his family
Though his back is sore
