My mother passed away on May 5th. We had a strained relationship and unfortunately we were not able repair it. This song is somewhat of my olive branch and an attempt at find peace.

Hello mom, I just want you to know
I’ve been thinking ‘bout you more than I let show
I don’t blame you for wanting a life you missed
You and dad were just kids
Tryin’ to learn what family is
Yeah we were something before the drift
Before life got heavy and the current rift
And I’ve been holding onto pieces of you
Beacon Place, the art shows, your wild creative truth
We got lost somewhere along the way
But Love don’t leave
Even in promises we couldn’t keep
I forgive you now and I know
You were tryin’ to be the best you could be
I don’t blame you for the holes in my days
Or those Cape Cod nights I learned to make my own way
And I remember when you tried your best
Cub Scout meetings and that den mom vest
Yeah we were something before the drift
Before life got heavy and the current rift
And I’ve been holding onto pieces of you
Beacon Place, the art shows, your wild creative truth
We got lost somewhere along the way
But Love don’t leave,
it just bends with the wind,
Even in promises we couldn’t keep
I forgive you now, and I know
You were tryin’ to be the best you could be
There was a time you came back around
Said you were ready to settle back down
We let you in and left the past alone
Hoped maybe this time we’d finally find home
But old words came like a coastal storm
Same sharp edges we’d known before
And the distance between us returned
New beginnings wanting peace but unable to dig deep
And I’m still holding onto pieces of you
The good and the broken, the honest truth
Yeah we got close but it slipped away
It’s too late now but I finally see
Even through the hurt we couldn’t outrun
You’ll always be my mother
And I’ll always be your son
Holding on to pieces of you

Wow, so sad. But hey, I think you did your mom a great thing here! So sorry for your loss.
