I struggled with how to console a woman who had lost her Mother in a car accident. As I offered many ideas, I wanted to conclude it with the only consolation that really matters, being there for someone.

The Words
The words to say,
It's far beyond my comprehension
how you've struggled with your pain.
Still I offer my condolences in vain.
The words that share
the memories of a lifetime
may give cause to your despair.
Still there's comfort in these memories you bare.
CHORUS
Life is short, yet love is sweet
and lingers when we've gone.
And so we lift our heads to face the dawn.
Life must go on.
The words we pray,
that gives us strength to carry on
and face another day
promises a light to guide our way.
The words that heal,
Time alone can speak the tongue
translation can't reveal.
It will slowly soothe the anguish you conceal.
CHORUS
Life is short, yet love is sweet
and lingers when we've gone.
And so we lift our heads and face the dawn.
Life must go on.
These words I show,
give little consolation,
still I speak them so you'll know,
there's a shoulder upon which your tears can flow.
