She’s been working double shifts at the convenience store
been standing on her feet ‘til she can’t stand no more
but the pay’s alright
and Lord knows she’s got no plans tonight

So she’s lookin’ through her fridge around at 1 am
and she finds the box of chocolates sent from him
about a month ago
wrapped up in a big pink bow
with a note to the sweetest girl he’s ever known
-but he won’t be coming home

She’s packed up all their memories out to the garage
can’t believe their life together was some mirage
the dreams that marriage brings
highchairs and old porch swings

Now another day to try and put her makeup on
but the radio keeps playing the same old songs
“love will find a way”
and there goes another day
Friday night her friends come by to paint the town
-but she’s nowhere to be found

There’s nothing greener in some other field
weep for all our memories never fulfilled

Half a year goes by as time keeps spinning ‘round
she gets home late from work and puts the groceries down
next to the telephone
sees the message light on
hears “it didn’t work out babe so I’m a comin’ back”
-but she’s too strong now for that
