THE BEST CHRISTMAS GIFT
I was twelve years old, fall on the farm, I was dropping hints to my folks
The baseball glove at the Sporting Goods was something to behold
Money was kind of tight back then, my hopes weren’t all that high
Somehow I thought I’d still get that glove, so I kept that dream alive
It’d be THE BEST CHRISTMAS GIFT I ever got
I knew once I put it on, I’d wear it most non-stop
It wouldn’t mean the world to me, but it sure would mean a lot
It’d be THE BEST CHRISTMAS GIFT I ever got
As the weeks rolled by, I thought of that glove every single day
I could see myself wearing it proud, I couldn’t wait to play
I’d dive for a real hard grounder, even tear my tee shirt
No doubt at all, I’d come up with the ball and some ol’ Midwestern dirt

It was Christmas Eve, cold and snow outside, we were warm by the fire’s glow
But Dad said,” Put on your coat, grab some wood from the shed, we’re heading down the road
The widow Brown’s family’s out of fuel, needs some food and clothing, too”
He grabbed a ham from the smokehouse, toys for the kids, said, ”it’s the right thing to do”
Two miles later, our truck pulled in, they came to meet us at their door
Mrs. Brown and three kids, wrapped up in blankets, trying to stay warm
When they saw everything we’d brought, they all smiled so wide
Then I knew how much I’d been richly blessed as tears fell from my eyes

It was THE BEST CHRISTMAS GIFT I ever got
I felt the true joy of giving, and I really liked it a lot
I wish what I experienced would never, ever stop
It was THE BEST CHRISTMAS GIFT I ever got
