Everytime I visit Texas, bad stuff happens. So I channeled my feelings into a song.

I got no tears for Texas
She was the blown star in my life
Austin, I was lost in
And Corpus Christi stole my wife
Deep in the heart of Texas
I found dispair and misery
So adios El Paso
Bluebonnet, stay away from me
I got no taste for Texas
No wings or pecan pie for me
Roadhouse outside Del Rio
I got myself a chicken fried steak
Good God, I was sick for days.
Deep in the heart of Texas
I found dispair and misery
So adios, Laredo
Bluebonnet, stay away from me
The other night I had a dream
My dog and I were by a stream
Some Texas Rangers happened near
They shot my dog and stole my beer
I got no ear for Texas
No, I don’t worship Stevie Ray
And ZZ, well they’re hot as iced tea
But I kinda like Lyle Lovett
Yeah, Lyle always makes me smile
Deep in the heart of Texas
I found dispair and misery
So adios, Amarillo
Bluebonnet, stay away from me
No I won’t mess with Texas,
Ain’t going there no more
‘Cause when you mess with Texas
Texas evens up the score

I love this song, Jeff. Your songs are as smart as they are fun and that’s really really rare and your killer combo I think, you can tell you have a lot of fun writing the songs and it comes out in your wordplay in the lyrics, humor and just knack for catchy melodies and chord construction. The tone of the insruments is one of my favorite things about the song, really reminds me of early Wilco ad The Hold Steady. I also think your chord construction throughout is excellent, really a wonderful arrangement of chords and licks. One suggestion I would make in regards to producion: I think overdubbing your voice would be very accomodating. Generally, simple and great melodies in mid tempo songs like this need some extra umph to carry the lead vocal, I think some overdubbing (just to clarify what I mean, I mean just singing the same melody on top of itself) would really go a long way for a song like this one. Jeff Tweedy does this on a lot of his songs with similar sounding / simple melodies (Think War on War, Kamera etc) Just a thought man. Overall it’s a great song with some really clever lyrics. If I’m ever in Texas this will be playing in my car for sure, hopefully I don’t get lost in Austin.
