About This Song

Nothin’s good as company shared with an old friend, even when it's your final visit.

Great job Marvin as usual.  Always enjoy your songs.  Very touching.  Only a very minor comment about” on that you can depend”  that’s not conversational to reverse the phrase like that.  Otherwise a very well told poignant tale.

Nice job of storytelling, as always. One small critique—chord changes a tad bit awkward in a few spots (for instance, at the beginning of the line “Old friend I’m glad I had a chance of knowin’ you”)—anyway, nice and straightforward narration of a long friendship.

Well old friend, what’s it been a year I guess we’re due
To spend some time together catching up and tradin’ news
Time sure passes fast these days who knows where it’s went
It seems like only yesterday we first became old friends

I hope you got my postcards and the box of fine cigars
I sent when I was on the road about the time you sold the farm
You know of all the places I’ve seen or ever been
Nothin’s good as company shared with an old friend

It takes such a long time to grow an old friend
And in the end it's times like these that make you tend
To think back on all you’ve done and what you’ve both been through
Old friend I'm glad I had a chance of knowin’ you

Well it looks like times arrived other folks are coming in
Guess it's time we start to talk about you in past tense
I'll look in on the family on that you can depend
So for now I'll say goodbye my old friend

It takes such a long time to grow an old friend
And in the end it's times like these that make you tend
To think back on all you’ve done and what you’ve both been through
Old friend I'm glad I had a chance of knowin’ you

Old friend I'm so glad I had the chance of knowin’ you
