About This Song

Based on some personal experience from when I was an artist. Exploring the tension between being on the road and longing for home.

Shades of Steely Dan—interesting subject matter—nice production/arrangement—Quite solid, if you ask me!!!  Best wishes for all your musical endeavors!

The Losing Game

Written by Sam Speirs

There's a nutcase in this bar room who is trying to pick a fight,
Though he's the twice the size that I am boys I think I'll be alright.
I can talk him round in circles 'till my buddies join the fun.
If he's looking for a victim he's selected the wrong one.
'Cause I'me the singer in the band,
All the bouncers know my name.
If he dares to lift a finger he'll be playing,
The Losing Game.

There's a van that's waiting to take me to some motel.
I will call and tell my sweetheart that the tour is going well.
I'll be weary as a working man who's killed a double shift,
But the sleep it won't come easy and my mind will start to drift.
'Cause I'm the singer in the band,
And this travelling's a pain.
And I know I'll start to wonder if I'm playing,
The Losing Game

Even though I'm winning when I play,
Darling all I really want to do is stay.
Music keeps on dragging me away.
Just wish I could stay,
I wish I could stay.

So, people when a band rolls in to play their songs for you,
Remember that the troubadours are working people too.
I can speak with some conviction, it's a subject I know well.
For most of us are stories that the world will never tell.
'Cause I'm the singer in the band,
And I'm here to entertain.
And I'll give you all I've got to give while playing
The Losing Game.
