About This Song

Written for my kids...just a little song to try to inspire them.

Feedback Requested

In a previous review by a "pro" song writer I was told that some of the lyrics may be too religious in nature. Now bear in mind I am not a religious person, I do not go to church but I am spiritual.

I never found it too religious so I'm looking for your thoughts as writers and music consumers.

Thanks

So the song starts out fun with the music. Then gets a bossy. It’s lyrically catchy, but not enough detail. It’s a song with advice in it.

This song would be fun if the person was doing as the other person did. Then the advice came in. After we heard all the fun bad things they were doing. Like you took us down that journey of all the wild things we can’t do but want to.

Like when I call my dad and he starts giving me advice like this and it’s not what I want to hear. Or someone giving feedback. That can make a person cringe.

I like the do as I say not as I do. But its kind of the hook, but kind of the chorus. but also the refrain. So it’s tough because you give the song away before it starts. That made it tough, no build up to that.

Like, lost my virginity when I was a teen you said stay pure but I did it anyway. See that’s crazy. Like what else are they going to do. Next the story progresses. Then the punch comes in.

You said don’t do it, but you did it so I did it.

That’s what I remember as a kid. Doing things I wasn’t supposed to. If my dad said don’t swear I did it. If he said don’t, I’de say you do. Then that line would follow but not without an explanation first.

There was always an explanation before the do as I do not as I say. Like a story had panned out before this grand happening. But you tell us the grand happening without a story first. Which gives it away, then when what we may or may not be expecting to be said, is said. We are either shocked, excited that we were right or we are looking for more in the story, because you already captured us with all the crazy things you did.

Like butchering a Llama then taking the hide to the laundry mat to dry the hide at 2 a.m. in the morning. Coming back after several hours and there’s blood on the floor of the laundry mat and the dryers caked with Llama fat.
Long story short, maybe I’ll tell it some day, but Trust me don’t try this. Do as I say, not as I do. Or not as I did.

Verse 1
Do as I say not as I do
Go to church and pray don't get a tattoo
And don't do as I did do as I say

Verse 2
Think before you speak and mean what you say
Turn the other cheek but don't look the other way
And don't do as I did do as I say

Chorus
It's easy to go astray when things are going wrong
You can never run away if you stay you'll get strong
If you do as I say not as I do
Go to church and pray don't get a tattoo
And don't do as I did do as I say

Solo - Chorus

Verse 3
Do as I say not as I do
Never betray someone close to you
And don't do as I did do as I say

Verse 4
Learn to fall in love and stay eternally
Get your guidance from above and accept apologies
But don't do as I did do as I say
Do As I Say

Chorus 2/2
It's easy to go astray when things are going wrong
You can never run away if you stay you'll get strong
If you do as I say not as I do
Go to church and pray don't get a tattoo
And don't do as I did do as I say
