The lights were on and the band's gone home. Sorry Charlie!

Funny thing about the chord progression We just keep returning to the old progressions, I still hear it a lot in many songs the old 50’s progression including some of the most popular songs, one that comes to mind immediately is the chorus part of a thousand years, What’s old is new again by Christina Perri https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rtOvBOTyX00

Nice and solid—maybe a little too “middle of the road” (similar to some of the comments others have made about this song), but once again I think your lyric craft is almost always pretty first-rate. I liked it.

She said as she finished packin’
This time I’m not movin’ back in
I don’t want to wait forever
Some things just don’t fit together
She said I’m so tired of cryin’
I can’t even feel you tryin’
I’m a fool for ever thinking’
You would notice my heart breakin’
I could not believe my ears I begged for one last chance
The lights were on and the band’s gone home and I had missed the dance
As every excuse that I’d ever used went spinnin’ through my head
I realized that she was right with every single word she said
She said as her tears were fallin’
I beg you please don’t bother callin’
Cry on someone else’s shoulder
It’s hard enough just startin’ over
She said I’ve been thinkin’ lately
You never did appreciate me
But I know love is always gamblin’
Then I heard the front door slammin’
I could not believe my ears I begged for one last chance
The lights were on and the band’s gone home and I had missed the dance
As every excuse that I’d ever used went spinnin’ through my head
I realized that she was right with every single word she said
She stared in disbelief when I swore I could change
And how ashamed I felt right then
For every star, every beat of my heart, every hour of every day
I’d be the man I should have been
I could not believe my ears I begged for one last chance
The lights were on and the band’s gone home and I had missed the dance
As every excuse that I’d ever used went spinnin’ through my head
I realized that she was right with every single word she said
I heard every word she said

I think the chord progression in the verses makes this one sound a little dated. Otherwise, everything else sounds current. Given your ability to write, I didn’t scrutinize the lyrics closely.
