About This Song

A little joke tune about greed, discord, and lucky dogs

Although a little dark, this is a cool song. Normally I would say the prosody is off (happy music, but dark kind of mean lyric). But this is one of those cases in which it works, in my opinion. In fact, I don’t think it would have worked with dark music.

thanks for the input Dick. I hear you - but have to admit that one of my favorite things in songwriting is juxtaposing lyrical content with its almost opposite musical tone - especially in joke songs like this one. If the music is light-heated you can cut deeper into the darkness lyrically and (for me at least) it still works - think of Monty Pythons “Always look on the bright side of death” complete with happy-go-lucky whistling -  sung in the movie “Life of Brian” by guys who are being crucified!

Or maybe “Souvenir of London” by Procol Harum - a nice bouncy tune about someone discovering they have syphilis!

The Legacy

You kept us up till the wee, wee hours
Regaling us with all those pointless anecdotes
About your youth
We all knew there was not a shred of truth
In a single thing you said

How did it feel to wield so much power?
Our eyes glazed over but you held us there
Quite against our will
We sat unflinching straight and still
Until we wished you were dead

That's the pressure of "family"
That's the promise of some reward
Whatever pleasure that we could feel
Was slowly stamped out with no regard

You played us all off of one another
Until we'd hate each other just as much
As we hated you
Divide and conquer was what you'd do
You didn't have to be so cruel

You said some day you'd leave us your money
But then instead you went and left it all
To your Pekinese
Not too many of us were pleased
Although I guess we understood

That's the pressure of "family"
That's the promise of some reward
Whatever pleasure that we could feel
Was slowly stamped out with no regard
