Songs From Merle
In a small town apartment down on fifth avenue
I’d sit on the couch as daddy would sing me the blues
On an old True Tone guitar, with cigarette breath, he’d sing me some Haggard and Jones
But one song he couldn’t get enough of was My Favorite Memory of All
You see he loved some Haggard
And I loved my daddy
And when he would sing, it made me so happy
Now that he’s gone
From this ole world
And all I have left are these songs from Merle
Those swinging doors was where I could be found
Mama tried to help me get right When the bottle had let me down
A man could get lost in those Big City nights all alone
I needed someone to call a friend, someone to sing me back home
You see I loved some Haggard
And so did my daddy
And when he would sing, it made me so happy
Now that he’s gone
From this ole world
And all I have left are these songs from Merle
