Dust Storm Warning came out of a title challenge I gave myself to push beyond my usual Americana lane. The title immediately made me wonder: what if the thing that changes your life doesn't come with any warning at all? What started as a challenge turned into a desert-country love song about getting blindsided by the right person.
Genre Note: Written as contemporary country with Southwestern/desert imagery.

Dust Storm Warning
Written by: Misty Mae Mason
Verse 1
Another Friday Night out with my friends
Tryin’ to drown out my last mistake
He strolled up and grabbed my hand for a dance
His sleepy dust-colored eyes held mine
Should’ve been my first warning
Chorus
He didn’t come with a dust storm warning
Rollin’ in with a half smile and backwards cap
He ain't nothin’ but a damn whirlwind
Just followin’ my dust that ain't settlin’
Yeah, he didn’t come with a dust storm warning
Verse 2
Few weeks later he’s still comin’ ‘round
We’re goin’ out on long desert drives
No maps or the past to guide us
Just us, the road and the starry nights
Should’ve been my second warning
Chorus
He didn’t come with a dust storm warning
Rollin’ in with a half smile and backwards cap
He ain't nothin’ but a damn whirlwind
Just waitin’ on my dust to clear
Yeah, he didn’t come with a dust storm warning
Bridge
All it takes is him flippin’ his cap back
Sendin’ me another “Good Morning Beautiful”
And I’m realizin’ my heart has blown his way
Somewhere between that second and third warning
Chorus
He didn’t come with a dust storm warning
No one would have seen this one coming
Skies are clear again after all my stormin’
He blew right through all my fencing
Yeah, he didn’t come with a dust storm warning
