I wanted to try and capture the idea that men "keep" women.

He still wanted a little “yes sir”
Every time he gave a task
And she could have all she wanted
Long as she would only ask
Such a good little plant for them
They say they grew her up right
Kept her instincts down so she wouldn’t fight
They tell her stories of a prince charming
To ignore flags, cause they aren’t alarming,
Any attention is good as long as he said
And she learned to keep house and to keep him fed
Oh the belief is old but still so many hold it true,
That somehow a man is just keeping you,
And there’s no real value in who you are,
Unless you are serving him like a star
The greater you dull the brighter he’ll shine
And everyone around you says that is just fine
And that’s the real fable- cause none of it’s true.
That a man is just keeping you
Innocence is used as a weapon only to subdue
No tolerance for any other attitude
So she thinks she’s got no real power
No will of her own
But she was running a business inside her own home
Avoiding the conflict and to never say no,
Always under fire and ready for inspection
She knows perfection is the going rate,
A learned behavior to negotiate,
With he who kept her life so well
And she earned her degree on how to live in hell.

Y’know…if you took this as the basis of another song written metaphorically, it would be very interesting…
