A veteran sheriff must deliver the news every family fears. On rain-soaked porches across town, he carries the unbearable weight of telling loved ones that someone they love isn't coming home. A story about grief, duty, and the silence before forever changes.

THE KNOCK
Written by Christopher Mason/Misty Mae Mason
Verse 1
Rain slid slow down the windshield glass
Address on a notepad in my hand
Head-on crash off County 2
Porch light burnin’ when I pulled through
Dogs barkin’ before I left the car
I took my hat off in the yard
Somewhere inside that little white frame
It was just another night
There’s a silence right before the knock
Right before the whole world stops
Right before somebody hears
“He ain’t comin’ home this time”
I’ve done this more than I can count
But the walk up still hits hard
Every door feels like the first one did
God, I hate being the knock
She opened up half asleep at two
Baby on her shoulder, already knew
Work boots lined up by the wall
Christmas pictures hung down the hall
Man, I hate that look
Said, “Is he hurt?” before I spoke
I looked down just long enough to breathe
Then gave her words she’ll never unhear from me
There’s a silence right before the knock
Right before the whole world stops
Right before a ring hits kitchen tile
And somebody breaks holdin’ onto denial
I’ve stood on porches town to town
Different names on every door I face
Every time I think I’m ready
Turns out I never will be
God, I hate being the knock
Headlights burnin’ on my porch
Engine idlin' in the dark
But I still sit there gripping the wheel
Still hear cryin’ in the rearview
There’s a silence right before the knock
Right before forever changes shape
Before “we” turns into “was”
Tomorrow night’ll be another driveway
Another house I don’t wanna walk to
No matter how many times I do it
It still feels like the first one too
God, I hate being the knock
