This was my first attempt at lyrics, working from a poem I wrote in 1985 just before I left for the Air Force. My family had a farm in Virginia with a small family cemetery in a field and that became the backdrop to this song.

Well, I was here when this tree was just a weed,
When this house was filled with all my family.
The ones who roamed these halls now just memories.
This yard was where we chased the summer sun,
Climbed the fence posts ‘til the day was done.
Dirt on my hands, grass stains on my jeans,
Where the land became a part of me.
This is where Momma raised me, taught me how to treat a lady,
And Dad, he taught me how to drive, gave me my first high five.
I was here when this tree kissed the morning sun,
When this house held every story we spun.
Time may weather wood and crack these walls,
But love still whispers through these halls.
This is where I had my first beer, shot my first deer,
We’d sit out here and steal that first kiss.
This is where I left for the infantry, for our stars and stripes, to fight for freedom’s right
I was here when this tree kissed the morning sun,
When this house held every story we spun.
Time may weather wood and crack these walls,
But love still whispers through these halls.
I thought I’d walk that path someday, ask her to wear my ring,
push my kids on that old tree swing.
But now I watch these fields of green,
Different times, different bloodlines
You see, this is where they buried me,
Where a flag flies high in memory,
A Gold star hung where she cried for me,
And this granite cross sits below this tree.
I was here when this tree was just a weed,
When this house was filled with my family.
But the love that lived here still breathes in memory.
