About This Song

This song has been a long time coming, but I recently connected with two great writers, Christine Joy and Curtis Flint and we hashed out the story. This song tells a heartfelt story of a young mom that takes her kid out of an abusive relationship with an interesting reveal in the bridge.

Relatable for many people, unfortunately. Good story.

I’m new, so I won’t be much help on feedback. Love the story being told here.

Reason to Fight

Written by Dusty Duhon

Verse 1
She woke up Sunday mornin’, him passed out in a chair
Cleaned up his whiskey bottles, said a quiet prayer
Bruises hid beneath her sleeves, she never told a soul
She might’ve stayed there forever, watchin’ him lose control
When his anger found her child, somethin’ in her broke
She grabbed her keys, grabbed her girl, and walked out that door

Chorus
She drove as far and fast as that old car could go
White knuckles on the wheel, heart beatin’ in her throat
Every ounce of courage came from the hand in hers
She’d do anything to keep her baby safe from hurt
She was her whole life…..Her reason to fight

Verse 2
Gas light glowin’, twenty dollars to her name
The fear of where they’re goin’ beat the fear of stayin’
From couches to cheap motels, tryin’ to get back on her feet
Grease-stained apron, writin’ dreams between receipts
No heat that winter, no warm coats, everything she owned
Was packed up in the backseat, wherever they called home

Chorus
She drove as far and fast as that old car could go
White knuckles on the wheel, heart beatin’ in her throat
Every ounce of courage came from the hand in hers
She’d do anything to keep her baby safe from hurt
She was her whole life…..Her reason to fight

Bridge
That night I saw the fear leave her eyes for the last time
My mother left what she knew to give me a better life
Didn’t know that night she changed mine forever.

Final Chorus
She drove as far and fast as that old car could go
I felt safe just knowin’ I wasn’t alone
All the strength I needed was in her hand I held
She picked me up and carried me straight out of hell
She gave me a life......A reason to fight

Tag

Yeah, she saved me that night
When she chose to fight
