I grew up in a small town in Central FL. A very close friend who lived a half block from me was dying of cancer. As his time was drawing near, his brother asked if I would eulogize my friend at his service, which I was pleased to oblige. I visited my friend a few days before he passed and we laughed and cried as we recalled our crazy times together. Ironically, as I focused on our experiences for the sake of the eulogy, I couldn't help thinking about how much our small town was, "JUST LIKE MAYBERRY."

1ST VERSE:
They say, “Things are always changing,
That they never stay the same.”
And the way the world’s unfolding,
I swear, it sometimes seems a shame.
But the time I share with lifelong friends,
Never fails to take me back
To those younger years
When we had no fears
Before things got so off-track.
CHORUS:
With the backdrop of our small town
Where the water tower still stands;
We all played sand-lot football
Every time we got a chance.
Our small town was just like Mayberry,
At least that’s how it seemed to me.
We stood for the National Anthem,
And in church, we took a knee.
2ND VERSE:
We loved him like a brother,
But in time he took another,
And the love they shared,
Couldn’t be compared,
Cause for them there was no other.
But my age-old friend
Sadly, reached the end
Of the time he had on earth,
And he left his space a better place
With compassion, and a grin.
CHORUS:
With the backdrop of our small town
Where the water tower still stands;
We all played sand-lot football
Every time we got a chance.
Our small town was just like Mayberry,
At least that’s how it seemed to me,
We stood for the National Anthem,
And in church, we took a knee
BRIDGE:
Andy Taylor, Barney Fife,
Opie and Aunt Bee
Whenever I’m with a lifelong friend,
That’s where my thoughts take me.
CHORUS:
With the backdrop of our small town
Where the water tower still stands;
We all played sand-lot football
Every time we got a chance.
Our small town was just like Mayberry,
At least that’s how it seemed to me,
We stood for the National Anthem,
And in church, we took a knee.
TAG:
We still stand for the National Anthem
And in church, we always take a knee.
