This song came to me while looking out my office window toward the state capitol, where I saw that both the US and VA state flags were at half-mast. It's a wonderful sign of respect, but we see it way too often!

Verse 1:
High up in the air, half-way up a pole
Is a flag that flies for someone we all probably should know
Don’t know who it is, I haven’t got a clue
But I’m sure I’ll know the answer when I hear the evening news
Chorus:
I give thanks I woke to see another day and maybe took somebody’s place
The tears will come and go
But all the memories will last
And we’re reminded when the flag’s half-mast
Verse 2:
The red, white, and the blue blowing in the wind
Appears to wave its last goodbye to an old and trusted friend
A life just disappeared, gone without a trace
Another soul has left this world to find a better place
Chorus:
I give thanks I woke to see another day and maybe took somebody’s place
The tears will come and go
But all the memories will last
And we’re reminded when the flag’s half-mast
Bridge:
It may fly for a soldier far from home
Or college students barely grown
Chorus:
I give thanks I woke to see another day and maybe took somebody’s place
The tears will come and go
But all the memories will last
And we’re reminded when the flag’s half-mast
