As a kid I grew up to always listening to my uncles & grandpa sit around and play some old bluegrass and country music. I always loved the song of the banjo, so wanted to write a song about one and the songs they use to play .
Feedback is always welcome as it make me stronger as a song writer.
Thanks Holden, I appreciate the feedback, I like your idea on the ending. I love a banjo as well and in todays country you notice it more and more in the back ground vs. a steel guitar or fiddle. Keep on keeping up with your great songs and writing as well.

I WAS SITTING THERE IN MY ROCKING CHAIR, JUST WATCHING THE RAIN COMING DOWN
THINKING ABOUT MY YOUNGER DAYS OF GROWING UP IN THIS OLD TOWN
HOW WE USED TO SIT AROUND THIS PORCH, SHOOTING THE BREEZE, SIPPING THAT JAR
WE’D LISTEN TO MY GRAND DAD PLAY ONE HELL OF A GUITAR
CHORUS
AND THAT OLD BANJO/SMOKEY MOUNTAIN MEMORIES/BLUE MOON OF KENTUCKY
SOUNDS GOOD TO ME, I CAN STILL HEAR THOSE LONESOME SOUNDS
AND THAT OLD BANJO/YOU ARE MY SUNSHINE/IS THE GRASS BLUER ON THE OTHER SIDE
I WISH THAT YOU WERE STILL AROUND/TO PLAY THAT OLD BANJO
ANOTHER YEAR GONE BY ANOTHER 4TH OF JULY/THERE SHOOTING FIREWORKS DOWN TOWN
AND ON THAT OLD GRAND STAND/THERE’S A BLUEGRASS BAND, FAMILY AND FRIENDS WOULD GATHER AROUND
THAT’S HOW WE USED TO CELEBRATE THE FOURTH, GOOD MUSIC UNDER THE STARS
THAT’S WERE WE’D LISTEN TO MY GRAND DAD, PLAY ONE HELL OF A GUITAR
CHORUS
BRIDGE
IT’S BEEN HANDED DOWN THREE TIMES I KNOW, TO ME FROM MY DAD, IT WAS MY
GRANDPA JOES’ AND WHEN I DIE AND THE LORD TAKES MY SOUL, I WILL HAND DOWN THIS
OLD BANJO
LEAD-CHORUS
OUTRO-AND WHEN I DIE AND THE LORD TAKES MY SOUL, I WILL HAND DOWN THIS OLD BANJO

Roger, this is one very well written song and is a joy to listen to. It stirs up strong emotions and its sincerity is something rare I think. You’ve done a great job with the vocal and subtle production- I haven’t often heard a banjo played so slow and meaningful. On that note, after your last line when you hand down this old banjo- I would love there to be a false ending resolve just as you have it, BUT to then just burn a banjo riff on a second outro over the same closing chords fading out. You know, like the next generation will put their own spin on this beautiful heirloom- and the story continues… Great song, perfectly written.
