About This Song

Some people do nothing to help those who have fought our wars. Too many hide behind the bumper stickers they put on their cars hoping to make it look like they have done something to help when in fact they have merely pasted a bumper sticker onto their car. What does the phase "I Support Our Troops" mean to people?. You can't just say it. You have to do it. As I put together my lyric I had hoped it would cause some people to see themselves in the picture I tried to paint. Perhaps they will stand up and lend a hand to the needy. Not sure about a genre for this song so I chose folk.

Hi Myrna
This is a sad lyric as there are many soldiers out there in this situation and it is heartbreaking.  I like these story type songs that sends a message out to the public to get them thinking about the brave soldiers that have gone to war to protect and preserve our freedom.  Thanks for sharing this.

Very nice song. I love the the concept of the spoken words for the long verses and how that contrasts with the harmonized singing parts. I like the the use of the more traditional song form for this, opposed to the modern day vese/chorus form. The lyrics and music production are excellent. If this were my song, I would definitely be pitching this to film/tv people. I think this would be considered for a lot of those types of opportunities.

Thank you both for your feedback. This was my first attempt at a recitation-type song. I was happy to see tht the message of the song reached out.

The Keys

The keys swung on a brown leather strap, concealed as they hung behind an old faded map
Hid by the homeless man, who sat with his brew, hearing the keys tingle, as the chilly winds blew
He lived in an alley near where he was born, a soldier forsaken, now frail and forlorn
No one to love him, a life without glee. The sound of the keys’ tingle, kept him company.

Alone in the darkness, just before morning light
He relived those battles, an old soldier must fight

The question’s been asked, even centuries ago. “Where does an old and frail soldier go?
Where are those people who profess to be kind? Where is their love”, the old soldier sighs?
Words come too easy for you’ve heard many say, “I support our veterans”, day after day,
But how have you done that? the question belies. For it’s too late to help, when an old soldier dies.

Alone in the darkness, just before morning light
He relived those battles, an old soldier must fight

The chilly winds blew as he said his goodbyes. He felt God’s hand touch him, a soft breeze passing by
He prayed and rolled over, closed his weary eyes. His frail body gave up. He laid there and died.

Alone in the darkness, just before morning light
He relived those battles, an old soldier must fight

They gathered his body from the cold frozen ground. Nobody cared he’d been born in this town
Nobody wondered whose keys they heard chime. As the old man’s possession, rang out one last time.

Alone in the darkness, just before morning light
He relived those battles, an old soldier must fight
He heard the guns firing, the bombs bursting grew dim
And he knew that the cruel war, was finally over for him.
God Bless the old soldier, now it’s over for him.
