I wrote this one with Neal Coty and James Dupre'. That's James on vocals.
This is a really good song the Music goes very well with the Lyrics which are very potent and “singin’ along with an old black man” I can see that.. nicely done Brent

Thanks for sharing, Brent! I for one, need a reminder that the bar is set extremely high, and analyzing a pro level song keeps me focused on improvement.

I love the feel of the song and the someday today concept. I love the part about ignoring the phone and being present in where you are at the time and the experience. A lost art these days. I liked the twist on “muddy waters cleared my mind.”

(Neal Coty, James Dupre’, Brent Baxter)
Drunk footsteps on cobblestone
Making me feel right at home
Even though I’m miles away from there
Gumbo cooking on the stove
Mixed with rum and cigarette smoke
Sticking to my soul, my clothes and my hair
I smell freedom in the air
CHORUS
I said someday I’d sail to New Orleans
Find myself getting lost in The Quarter
In some shady place with a hurricane
Blowing my troubles away
And singing along with an old black man
While the saints go marching through Dixieland
Always dreamed I’d be right here someday
And it looks like someday today
Phone buzzing on the bar
But I don’t give a damn who you are
Even if it’s you, we got nothing left to say
I guess the muddy water’s cleared my mind
It was over before we said goodbye
Now it’s high time I let me roll away
CHORUS
Looks like someday today
The sun breaks through the clouds
As the bartender sets another drink down
She smiles at the smile on my face
And she says “It’s gonna be some day today”
CHORUS
And we’re singing along the best we can
As the saints go marching through Dixieland
I always dreamed I’d be right here someday
And it looks like someday today
It looks like someday today
Looks like someday today

Great tune Brent. Absolutely LOVE the imagery in the first verse. I can see the gumbo on the stove and smell the cigarette smoke in my hair.
I almost wish you guys had continued the nostalgic descriptions through the second verse rather than introducing the estranged lover angle, I felt it raised more questions than it answered, but that’s purely personal taste.
I also would have loved to have heard a small cajun-style brass lick somewhere in the background of the track, I think that would have colored it up really nicely and added to the ambience in a positive way.
Can’t wait to hear more of your stuff!
