Seven steps to love
Papa strapped us in the backseat
We’d play games along the way
“I Spy” was our favorite
Every Saturday
35 was such a long stretch
A winding, twisting road
We couldn’t wait to get there
To Grandpa’s house we’d go
Chorus:
It was seven treads to the top
To get to Grandpa’s porch
He’d be rocking in his old pine chair
Beneath the tiki torch
He told us those stairs we climbed
To get to him above
Were more than just wood and nail
They were, his seven steps to love
Seven steps to love
Is how he and Grandma met
Grandpa was a post man
And a World War II vet
Grandpa climbed up those steps
In the fall of 49
Handed her a stack of mail
and a pick up line
Chorus:
It was seven treads to the top
To get to Grandpa’s porch
He’d be rocking in his old pine chair
Beneath the tiki torch
He told us those stairs we climbed
To get to him above
Were more than just wood and nail
They were, his seven steps to love
Grandpa told that story
Each time we were there
Grandma always laughed at him
On the memories that he shared
Grandma always scolded him
And said we’d had enough
But she always love to hear the one
Bout the seven steps to love
Chorus:
It was seven treads to the top
To get to Grandpa’s porch
He’d be rocking in his old pine chair
Beneath the tiki torch
He told us those stairs we climbed
To get to him above
Were more than just wood and nail
They were his seven steps to love
Its been ten years tomorrow
Since grandpa passed away
We still sit upon his porch
And chuckle on those days
We know that grandpas rocking
Somewhere up high above
And telling that ole story
About his seven steps to love
(Speaking part) That’s right we can almost hear him right now
(Singing) He still telling that old story bout his seven steps to love
