About This Song

I wrote this one with Neal Coty and James Dupre'. That's James on the vocals.

Nice song, lyrics, and melody; and, am very impressed with your demo’s quality!  I am curious to know who you may have co-written this with.

Love it, so well told. Can see everything, great images.  Singer sounds a lot like Eric Church for what that’s worth.  Anyway, only minor thing, as far as using Austin,  that sometimes get overused, like just was in “Hotel Key” and maybe some others.  Not that it would or should keep it from being recorded.  Maybe “up in Boston” ?
Nah, this is country. scratch that. keep it the way it is. great job.

Love the line‘Cuz what never starts never has to end!  Great tune Brent, love it because I can really relate to it!  All about that emo Bro and you got it all over this one!

Whatever That Was

Written by Brent Baxter

Last time we were in this town
We were fresh out of those caps and gowns
On Lone Pine Loop riding around
Putting goodbye off
Trying not to get too heavy
Drinking warm beer on the levee
If I’d a tried, you might’a let me
But all we did was talk

CHORUS
Never quite lovers, but more than friends
Maybe that’s the best thing we could’ve been
‘Cuz what never starts never has to end
Girl, you look as good as you did back then
We’re standing just as close as we ever did
Laughing and falling right back in
To whatever that was
Whatever that was again

You got someone back in Austin
I got someone but we ain’t talking
Now here we are on Main Street walking
Back down memory lane
I hold your car door open
Hold on tight for one long moment
But we both know where this ain’t going
Hey, some things never change

CHORUS

CHORUS
Never quite lovers, but more than friends
Maybe that’s the best thing we could’ve been
‘Cuz what never starts never has to end
