When you're trying to get to heaven, sometimes you miss a turn somewhere.
what works, what doesn't
Thanks for the feedback Frank! This song is almost 30 years old and was published back then. I re-wrote it last year, brought up the tempo, changed a verse, and fixed the chorus. I had the demo made and I got it in front of the head of the country division at BMG publishing. He sat on it for a while and then eventually passed on it. My goals are to write the best songs I can, and work to get them played by artists and hopefully cut. You are right that it isn’t really specifically for the Christian music genre. It’s really just a country song about finding your way as a man. Thanks for your thoughts.

I wish the way to Heaven
was a smooth and easy ride
on two long narrow rails of steel
running side by side
I'd ride that train to glory
if I knew which way it went
instead of stumbling down
this winding road of discontent
I think I missed a turn somewhere
I've gone back looking
I can't find it anywhere
I’m hoping heaven hears my prayer
Cause I think I missed a turn somewhere.
Now wisdom's hard to come by
for a man at any age
but I'd do well to come by more if It'll
help me through this stage
They say "you don't know it all boy"
or "you ain't a child no more"
and it grinds at me inside that I'm
unsure about the score
I think I missed a turn somewhere
I've gone back looking
I can't find it anywhere
I’m hoping heaven hears my prayer
Because I think I missed a turn somewhere.
I let a good job slide right through
my fingers yesterday
can't even say exactly why
I couldn't stand another day
I feel so lost and lonesome
I wonder when I’ll settle down
Cause it’s hard to find a man who doesn’t know which way he’s bound
I think I missed a turn somewhere
I've gone back looking
I can't find it anywhere
I’m hoping heaven hears my prayer
Cause I think I missed a turn somewhere.
I’m hoping heaven hears my prayer
Because I think I missed a turn somewhere.

Hi Matthew - I don’t know what your goals are. Probably this one is not written for the Billboard Charts, a publisher might say it sounds dated.
I don’t know much about the Christian market in the US, but I would guess the song may be too ambivalent for that market.
For me it is a beautiful song, meaningful and with a great flow. From my point of view everything works, I really like it and I would spend money for it!
