A take on the “better half” cliche idea. (Note: Suno “cover” of original acoustic performance)
Commercial viability
The short: yep, commercially viable
The long: just like throwing various pasta onto the kitchen cabinets to see if it sticks…during a blood moon, in a leap year, on a Tuesday…because that is the music business
This is a great idea, has a great sound, and is catchy. I do think that there should be more clarity. It’s unclear with how he’s torn apart and his back’s against the wall and he’s missing something he can’t get back. Why? Maybe consider a lyrical bridge that sums that up?

[Verse]
You Could be my better half
If I were’nt so torn apart
Even though I know
Picking up the pieces ain't that hard
Takes two to tango
but my backs against the wall
I think I keep it there
Just in case I fall
[Chorus]
My coin tosses are landing on tails now
That's why I end up looking down
I'm making U-turns while I'm driving
Can't get it right without you around
There's two sides to every story we have
I like the ones where I made you laugh
I'm missing something that I can't get back
You’re the good in the goodbye
And I’m just alone in the lonely
my better half
[Verse]
You tried to be the girl to take me to a place
I never know, I couldn't reach it by myself
But I'm the one to blame, couldn't get out of my own way
Now I'm thinking that I could use the help
[chorus]
I need a light switch by my bedside
It's too dark in this empty bed
I'm playing records all night in the kitchen
To listen to words I never said
There's two sides to every story we have
I like the ones where I made you laugh
I'm missing something that I can't get back
You’re the good in the goodbye
And I’m just alone in the lonely
my better half
[instrumental bridge]
[Chorus]
There's two sides to every story we have
I like the ones where I made you laugh
I'm missing something that I can't get back
You’re the good in the goodbye
And I’m just alone in the lonely
my better half
My better half
My better half

I like this song. It’s got a nice sense of longing. I would change the word “records” to “music” because who plays records in the kitchen anymore? Consistency. In the first line it’s “you could be my better half” and the refrain is “better half”. But then later, she is the “good” in goodbye. The feeling of the song is of longing and loss. So to me as a listener, at the end of this version, the feeling is uncertain. The first line was hopeful so a clarification at the very end would help. Like “wish you were still my better half”. Then you’ve come full circle. Just my.02
