What’s In It For...

Written by Dale Schumaker

I wake up every mornin’ to a mirror I don’t like
Bills stacked on the table, another sleepless night
Coffee’s cold and so’s my heart, nothin’s goin’ right
I’m chasin’ every dollar, but losin’ every fight
Every road I’ve taken just leads to misery
Every deal I’m makin’, I whisper selfishly
In every situation, like a broken melody
I ask, “What’s in it for me?”

Got a call from Mama sayin’, Son come sit a spell
There’s a little white church down by the old Mission Bell.”
“I’ve got my reasons, and I’ve got my doubts as well,”
But I showed up Sunday mornin’, feelin’ more like goin’ to hell
Slipped in the back pew, my arms crossed defensively
Thinkin’ I don’t need no preacher preachin’ at me
Still that question lingered stubbornly
“What’s in it for me?”

Then the preacher spoke of mercy, grace that sets you free
Of a Savior on a rugged cross who paid the price for me
The Good Book is hope for every sinner, chains released
There’s peace beyond the prison of selfishness and greed
He said, “Child, it’s forgiveness and eternity,”
And the truth washed over me
I was once blind, but now I see,
What’s in it for me

He talked about the promises written in red
How Jesus died and rose again, just like He said
Said the Bible’s full of treasures, more than daily bread
A brand-new life for broken hearts, no more livin’ half-dead
Something stirred inside of me, I fell down to my knees
All those years of wonderin’ brought me to this plea
“Lord, if You can use a wretch like me…”

Then the preacher spoke of mercy, grace that sets you free
Of a Savior on a rugged cross who paid the price for me
The Good Book is hope for every sinner, chains released
There’s peace beyond the prison of selfishness and greed
He said, “Child, it’s forgiveness and eternity,”
And the truth washed over me
I was once blind, but now I see,
What’s in it for me

Yes, I was once blind, but now I know
What’s in it for me
