About This Song

Born from both my work as a paramedic and struggles in my personal life, this song wrestles with trying to hold everything together. Duct tape and rescue ropes can’t fix what only God’s mercy can carry.

These are my very first songs. I’ve made a mess of figuring out how to get lyrics and melody into something real. I have everything to learn, so I welcome any guidance and honest feedback.

Duct Tape & Rescue Rope

Written by Chad Pate

I grew up where the pine trees cut the sky,
Red dirt roads taught us just to get by.
Hands tried to fix what was fallin’ apart,
Silence pressed heavy on a tender heart.
I thought if I hauled what others let fall,
Maybe I’ d matter, maybe that was my call.
But duct tape won’ t mend what’ s already torn,
It peels in the rain, can’ t weather the storm.

Duct tape won’ t hold what was never whole,
Rescue ropes burn deep lines in my soul.
God, teach these hands to release, not repair,
Wrap ’ em in mercy and trust You’ re there.
I can’ t drag every burden to my shoreline of hope,
So I wrap ’ em in mercy… and place ’ em in Your hands.

I burned up my palms on a frayin’ rope,
Tried to pull ’ em all to a shoreline of hope.
But the shore I dreamed was never mine,
Hope’ s only alive when it’ s Yours, not mine.

Duct tape won’ t hold what was never whole,
Rescue ropes burn deep lines in my soul.
God, teach these hands to release, not repair,
Wrap ’ em in mercy and trust You’ re there.
I can’ t drag every burden to my shoreline of hope,
So ah wrap ’ em in mercy… and place ’ em in Your hands.

I can’ t patch the cracks with tape and hope,
Can’ t drag every soul with my rescue rope.
I can’ t be the cross You already bore,
So ah lay ’ em down… and ah drag no more.

…I place ’ em in Your hands.
