The 2nd verse ("the light it seems to change") just popped into my head complete one night, and I built the rest of it around that. The image for me is standing at the house in the country where I grew up.

The day is packing her belongings
And the sun is finally headed home
(A) melancholy is prolonging
Suddenly I feel so all alone
And then the light it seems to change
Violet yields and crimson pales
Time and space are rearranged
And for a moment you were there
Come said the storm tide to the sailor
Come pour your heart into the sea
Come live and die upon your failures
And in return you shall be free
The distant starlight sees so clearly
Your anger binds you like a chain
Lashed to the pain you hold so dearly
The flames burn out but the fear remains
In due time you'll lay down your frustrations
You'll learn your journey’s not a goal
There never was a destination
There only ever was the road
Come said the war-time to the soldier
Come beat your prune hooks into spears
(It) takes more than time to make you older
You will survive beyond your years
And so the night seems to be growing
Horizons dim and fade from view
I stand and watch the embers glowing
And for a moment think of you
Somehow my thoughts return to you
