About This Song

This song takes a look at some cultural stuff that we often take as a given, and maybe need to inspect more carefully. It's about looking through society's norms and seeing a very unsettling picture. It's also about being depressed in NYC.

This is a live version of a song that doesn't yet have a studio version... I'd really love thoughts on what type of production and performance might get the song to shine. I am trying to go for a dramatic/cinematic feel.

This is such a cool song!  I don’t understand it all, but that is some of the appeal for me. It’s also unique in that the only rhyme is in the chorus, but I think it works.

Personally, I would not mess with the production very much. I think the spare guitar against the piano and a little bass (I think) really fits the feel of this song. I would be afraid of muting the overall mystique by adding too much production. Possibly you could bring in electric guitar and drums when you get loud in the chorus before the bridge and the bridge, but then drop them out when you go back into “it must be you”. Just a thought….

Love your voice.

I love this song , the production sounds great on this live performance you have recorded, the imagery of lyrics I think should be at the forefront .

they're giving out diagnoses like they're halloween candy
they're building a market and a nation of addicts
and we all owe our smiles to the company

all dressed up and no one to care about
you ask me how the job is going
it's going, it's going, don't worry, i say

so how d'you deal with the weather up here?
it's always bright and a little phrenetic
it's always dry and cool and clear
it always makes my heart beat off beat

and i'm flipping off the guy on the subway who's angry
'cause men walk down the street with other men
he says, god is pissed, and he's coming, he's coming

and on the train with nice shoes and shiny nails
something in your hair to make it stay like that
you look sharp and ready, so i guess the pills are working

so how d'you deal with the weather up here?
it's always bright and a little phrenetic
it's always dry and cool and clear
it always makes my heart beat off beat

it's always sunshine
earlier and earlier these days
can't you see it baby, this is what you get for being so good
sunshine, sunshine
can't you see it, keep trying, keep trying

it must be you
it must be you
we all can see it
it must be you

so how d'you deal with the weather up here?
it's always bright and a little phrenetic
it's always dry and cool and clear
it always makes my heart beat off beat
so how d'you deal with the weather up here?
it's always bright and a little phrenetic
it's always dry and cool and clear
it always makes my heart beat off beat
