Someone Else’s Hands

Written by David Philip Ireland

Woke up in the dark this morning to the softly closing door
A paper heart upon my pillow fluttered to the floor
“Love you always” written there, our epitaph in blue
And deep inside I hear a voice; ‘I’ll always love you too’

I left your heart in someone else’s hands
This nightmare existence wasn’t part of our plans
Now the days spent together aren’t the same as they were
And through nights spent apart
I’m just tossing and turning
And I’m rolling along trying to salvage what I can
Cause I left your heart
In someone else’s hands

Woke up in the dark this morning to the softly humming phone
Your morning message on the screen chilled me to the bone
It simply said ‘Forever’, but it’s too soon for goodbyes
Forever isn’t long enough for the likes of you and I

So I’ll say my prayers out loud
If there’s anybody up there to hear
Or I’ll sink to the bottom of a glass if there’s not
I could sure use a sympathetic ear right about now
And it’s you I always turn to
Oh, Hell!
I forgot…

Woke up in the dark this morning to the softly closing door
A paper heart upon my pillow fluttered to the floor
“Love you always” written there, our epitaph in blue
And deep inside I hear a voice; ‘I’ll always love you too’
