Willie,

Two things I really liked: the refrain in this sounds like a Beatles song - very pretty. The melody is very pleasant to listen to.

What bothered me is that all you have said is: “things have worked out as we planned”. Though you say it several different ways, it boils down to that thought. And while it is pretty to listen to, it isn’t very interesting. There is no contrast, no tension to resolve, no twist, etc. If you had made the key point by showing things that could have gone wrong, but didn’t (for example), it might make us care that things worked out well.

It’s a pretty, but just needs something to draw us in a little more.

Glad to see you on Frettie.

Thanks Willie for sharing this.

Really pretty. I do like the melody very much as well as the way the song feels. I’d agree with Dick, it just needs something to deliver that pop/contrast to the rest of the song and refrain.

Very unique feeling for a wedding/anniversary song. I like!

Your voice is awesome. When you’re in a lower range it sounds just like Greg Lake. When you go high it’s just like Graham Nash. Great song too.

If you do a full band version, definitely do a call and response to back up singers with the final few “by my side"s. And like Dick said, make it Beatles-like, maybe the same instrumentation as “In My Life” or “Nowhere Man.”

By My Side
© Willie Hawkins 8-10-13
V #1
I want to spend, the rest of my life, - with you, as my bride All of the days and moonlit nights, with you, by my side I see you wearing, this, golden band Traveling through, our lives, as we planned
Refrain: Now that you stand, by my side (by my side), by my side (by my side) V2.
The stars in the sky, could all go out, and you’d be my guide The birds will fly high; without a doubt, when you’re by my side The fish in the ocean, the, clouds in the skies Watching the sun light, that, reflects in your eyes
Refrain: Now that you stand, by my side (by my side), by my side (by my side)
Bridge;
Even in sickness, for poor or rich Love and devotion, that’s all we will give For, as long as, we, both shall live
Refrain: Now that you stand, by my side (by my side), by my side (by my side)
Now that you stand, by my side (by my side)
Now that you stand, by my side
