After John Prine's death, I read an interview with his wife Fiona in Rolling Stone. Fiona talked about her last days with John holding his hand. That is my third verse and the song was written backwards building a story about a couple.

EMPTY NEST, AND AN EMPTY HOME
THE LITTLE BIRDS FLEW, AND THE CHILDREN GONE
THE CHIRPS AND LAUGHS, ARE SILENT AS A MOUSE
NOT MUCH GOING ON FOR US IN A QUIET HOUSE
SO WHO AM I, AND WHO ARE WE
THERE’S A CHANGE, IN THE FAMILY
THEY’VE TAKEN FLIGHT, TO MAKE NEW LIVES
WE’RE LEFT BEHIND WONDERING HOW WE WILL SURVIVE
CHORUS
I TAKE THEE DEAR, TO BE MY WIFE
TO HAVE AN HOLD, THROUGH DEATH AND LIFE
FOR SICK OR HEALTH, FOR RICH OR POOR
EVEN WHEN WE’RE LEFT ALONE AND WANTING MORE
WHERE THERE’S A START, THERE IS AN END
TIME TO SAY GOODBYE, TO MY CLOSEST FRIEND
I’LL HOLD YOUR HAND, AS YOU PASS ON THROUGH
THE GATES OF HEAVEN ARE OPEN WIDE WAITING FOR YOU
CHORUS
I TAKE THEE DEAR TO BE MY WIFE
TO HAVE AN HOLD, THROUGH DEATH OR LIFE
FOR SICK OR HEALTH FOR RICH OR POOR
AND EVEN WHEN I’M LEFT ALONE AND WANTING MORE
I TAKE THEE DEAR, TO BE MY WIFE
TO HAVE AN HOLD, THROUGH DEATH AND LIFE
FOR SICK OR HEALTH, FOR RICH OR POOR
EVEN WHEN WE’RE LEFT ALONE AND WANTING MORE
