Bible By The Bed is a classic country gospel track that tells the story of redemption and the power of God's word if read each day. The song idea comes from my personal testimony after a 20 year battle with alcohol and a bible that laid next to my bed unread. It was co-written with my good friend Billy McDowell.

Oh, one more thing. You could say “It belonged to my mama’s mother” for that one line. Lots of alliteration with that “m” sound in that one.

Hey man, love this idea and praise God for deliverance…The melody is good. I think the lyrics are worth revisiting like other comments have said. On the chorus, Bible by the Bed is great alliteration… love that!
This might be subjective but a hookier line might be to contrast opening the bible with closing eyes or lay down with pick up ie
“So now I don’t lay down my head
Until I pick up that Bible by the Bed”
God Bless ya brother!

Bible by the bed
By Cameron Sheffield and Billy McDowell
Dust on the cover
King James, Red Letter
Given to me when I was ten
Well worn black leather
It belonged to Momma's daddy
Passed on down to me again
That ole Bible was always in my reach
Even on those nights when I'd cry myself to sleep
There is power in those words if I only choose to read
So now I don’t lay down my head
until I open
that Bible by the bed
Too drunk to read it
Didn’t know how much I need it
Until I made Jesus my friend
Fragile pages,
Scribbled notes, marked up phrases
Grace to cover every sin
That ole Bible was always in my reach
Even on those nights when I'd cry myself to sleep
There is power in those words if I only choose to read
So now I don’t lay down my head
until I open
that Bible by the bed
So now I don’t lay down my head
until I open
that Bible by the bed x2

Hello Cameron,
I just read your first verse, and I know that this is a personal story of yours, so anyone would understand if you didn’t want to change who your bible was handed down from, but I read that first verse one time and instantly saw something that I wanted to point out as a possible change.
What if that first verse read like this?:
King James, Red Letter
Well worn black leather
Given to me when I was ten
Dust on the cover
It belonged to my Grandmother
Passed on down to me again
Just a thought. I think those rhymes for lines 1 and 2, and 4 and 5, make it read really well. I also used your King James, red letter line first, because it’s a powerful first line, and the listener pictures right away what you’re singing about. And… I know see that you did rhyme those lines in the second verse with read it/need it and page/phrases.
Nice job and good luck with your song!
