I had this "friend" he and his fiancee called off their wedding three weeks before they were to marry. As "he" was taking down the memories this song came about.

Hi Brett! Cool song! The inner rhyming on the first verse line 3 just makes that verse weave beautifully. I am certainly no expert but the first verse and second verse begin with a story then that idea seems to be looking for more development….like I want to know why this thing needs to be put in the grave. I have been to Kerrville quite a few times and this song sounds like that modern folk that has a tremendous following…..like what I hear on Folk Alley. The constant guitar groove is great and it seems to have a storytelling quality to it. So what is it that “is what it is?” Thank you for posting this and for giving us the opportunity to listen, learn and give feedback:)

Dori,
Thank you for taking the time to listen and offer up some feedback. I’ve often thought that this song needs more in the way of development leading up to the “I think it’s time we put this in the grave” so I appreciate you pointing that out. I’ll play around with a few ideas I have and see if I paint a deeper perspective.
Never been to Kerrville, TX but I like the sound of Folk Alley!

There’s a hole in the wall
Where our picture used to hang
I hope you’ll call but my phone never rings
Yeah you’re gone
You need a different kind of love
Well it is what it is
But it sure ain’t like it was
When I’d get home from work
I was always in a mood
I never meant to take it out on you
But I did and I guess you’d had enough
Now it is what it is
But it sure ain’t like it was
There was a time when you’d put your hand in mine
We were the talk of this town
Then something changed
And it’s never been the same
And that’s because
It is what it is
But it sure ain’t like it was
I think it’s time
We put this in the grave
There are some things
That can’t be saved
When you’re all in
Sometimes you bust
Well it is what it is
But it sure ain’t like it was
Someday when we both look back
We’ll see we gave it all we had
The tricky thing with love is sometimes it’s not enough And that’s because
It is what it is
But it sure ain’t like it was

Hi Brett, I like the lyric! I don’t think it’s Country. It could work well as a Rock song with an underlying monotonous rhythm.
