The C.L.I.M.B. Podcast #221: Online Co-Writing 101

The CLIMB Show by Brent Baxter, Team SWPro on May 05, 2020

None of us expected this pandemic or how it would affect our lives. For songwriters, it’s made writing in the room impossible! However, we have virtual song writing rooms!

How can YOU make the best of your online co-write? And what are the pros of connecting with co-writers online? Brent & Johnny dive in!

LISTEN NOW: https://bit.ly/CLIMB221

Here are the show notes:

THE GOOD NEWS:
More people are open to online cowriting these days. There are no long lunches and no commute, so it's more efficient. If you or your cowriter are writing in a home studio, more gear is available. This may allow you to get a good recording going RIGHT THEN. And you can get great results while writing remotely. I just had a single released by former "The Voice" contestant, WILKES that we wrote remotely. It's called "Jealous Of The Night." I also currently have a southern gospel "hold" on a song I wrote remotely.

THE BAD NEWS:
No, it's not quite like being in the room. And some potential cowriters are uncomfortable or unwilling to give it a try. And it can be harder to play along together because of lag time issues. (UPDATE: since recording the episode, I heard about AudioMovers.com and JamKazam.com, which are supposed to help you play together remotely with no lag. I haven't tried them yet, but they may be work investigating.) Also, there are no long lunches, so online writing can be less relational than writing in person.

HOW TO FIND COWRITERS:
In The CLIMB Community on Facebook, comment on Music Monday and Cowriter Connect.
If you're a Songwriting Pro subscriber, attend our regular Co+Writer Cafe’ online events, which are geared specifically to help you find cowriters.

PRE-WRITE
Gather ideas or riffs or hooks or melodies or whatever your songwriting superpower is. It's a songwriting potluck, so be sure and bring a dish!
Make sure your tech works- test your camera and mic ahead of time. This can save a lot of frustration on the front-end of the write.

DURING YOUR ONLINE WRITE
Sit close to camera, so your cowriter can "read" your face.
Feel free to use the bathroom, refill coffee, etc. if needed. You CAN leave the room.
Many writers use Google Docs, which allow all the cowriters to look at the same lyrics.
Record from your end, make sure you get a work tape before you bail.
If it goes well, get another date on the calendar BEFORE you hang up! It can be hard to lock folks down after the cowrite, even if it goes well.
