The C.L.I.M.B. #217: The Radio Is Not Good Enough

The CLIMB Show by Brent Baxter, Team SWPro on April 07, 2020

Maybe your songs are JUST AS GOOD as the songs on the radio. That's good! But it's probably NOT good enough. Why is that? Listen in to find out if the radio really IS the bar.

LISTEN NOW on the DiscMakers website: bit.ly/radionotgoodenough

You can also listen right here:

Here are the key takeaways:

"Just as good as the radio" will often NOT be good enough to actually get you on the radio, if you're an unknown songwriter. If a song is "just as good," then the artist will probably just cut a song that they or their friends wrote. If it's "just as good," why would an artist pick yours over their own?

Your song has a better chance if it's very well-crafted... but different.

What kind of different? After all, pros say they want something different, but they'll often pass on a song for being "too different." What gives? What kind of different is the RIGHT kind of different? Look at songs that an artist (who is also a strong songwriter) records that they did NOT write themselves. If an artist is a great songwriter and decides to record a song they didn't write... that's the kind of song that it takes to get a cut and maybe get on the radio.

Here's the list of "different but still radio" provided by music publisher, Woody Bomar:

"WRITTEN IN THE SAND" by Old Dominion
"GIRL GOIN' NOWHERE" by Ashley McBryde
"MORE HEARTS THAN MINE" by Ingrid Andress
"BOY" by Lee Brice
"THE HOUSE THAT BUILT ME" by Miranda Lambert
"I GOT THE BOY" by Jana Kramer
"DRUNK GIRL" by Chris Janson
"FOLLOW YOUR ARROW" by Kacey Musgraves
"MOST PEOPLE ARE GOOD" by Luke Bryan
"SOME OF IT" by Eric Church
"BREAK UP IN THE END" by Cole Swindell
"I HOPE" by Gabby Barrett
"HOMECOMING QUEEN" by Kelsi Ballerini

Listen to these songs and see if you get a more clear picture of "different but still radio." Note the absence of party songs. It's really hard to get an outside party song recorded- and on the radio.

If YOU want to pitch your song to a hit country artist, here is your chance! William Michael Morgan scored a #1 hit and gold single with "I Met A Girl," and he's looking for his next few singles. And he's going to listen to songs from the C.L.I.M.B. and Songwriting Pro communities! This event is ONLINE, so it doesn't matter where in the world you live. God bless,

Brent
