Matt Stell
Website: https://mattstellmusic.com
Artist Trends: A lot of Stell’s recent work discusses heartbreak. The songs mostly mainstain a slower to mid-tempo, but he does still have some upbeat songs sprinkled in. He relies heavily on strong electric guitar for his upbeat songs and ambient or acoustic guitar for his slower ones. Pedal steel is also heard on a lot of his different tracks. He writes on some of his songs but not all. There are a multitude of writers on the songs so it seems like he is open to searching and finding good music.
EP Trends: The songs on the EP cover a variety of topics, from crazy nights out to a truck that painfully reminds Stell of an ex. The songs are very pop country with a lot of classic country elements. There are various writers on the project between the different tracks. Stell writes on some but not all. The inclusion of different sounds, such as synths and piano, show that Stell seems open to experimental songs while maintaining his classic pop country sound.
EP: : One Of Us
Released: February 10, 2023
Producers: Matt Stell, Ash Bowers, Clint Lagerberg
℗ 2023 Records Label, LLC
1. : One Of Us
Writers: Gavin Slate, James Barker, Jim McCormick, Travis Wood
Duration: 3:02
Key: C Major
Tempo: 90 BPM
Subject: Stell talks to his audience using the phrase “one of us,” to describe the different friends in his friend group. The hook claims that if any of these stories sound familiar to the listener then they may be “one of us,” fitting into the the country raised group.
Music: Slower tempo. Simple ambient electric guitars accompany Stell in the verses. Powerful drums and electric guitar comes in in the first chorus and follow through the rest of the song, making it more upbeat than the first verse.
Notes: I like when EPs or albums begin directly speaking to the listener. It invites them in.
