Album Trends: Cody Johnson heavily uses metaphor in his songs. He uses similar instruments throughout his different songs (acoustic guitar, peddle steel guitar, fiddles, electric guitar, organic drums), which makes his sound very cohesive. This album is about a range of topics. Multiple of the songs are about the loss of a relationship, others cover more personal topics such as Johnson’s home state of Texas and a home invasion he endured, and others are stories told through third person. In each song, Johnson showcases a wide vocal register. When he sings high it is usually with great emotion and he likes to belt in his chest voice. His lower register is usually used in his more mellow songs and verses.

Track Listing
1. : Work Boots
Writers: Brett Beavers, Canaan Smith, Jason Afable
Duration: 2:49
Key: D Major
Tempo: 83 BPM
Subject: In this song, Cody’s internal monologue is encouraging him to pull together his energy at the end of a long work week to go dance with a girl at the bar. He tells his “work boots” that they’ve got some “work to do.” He speaks to his boots figuratively as well as a metaphor for himself.
Music: The song has a traditional country sound. It is heavy on the fiddle and peddle steel guitar. There is also a strong repetitive kick drum that keeps it upbeat and moving. The song maintains this upbeat tempo pretty uniformly throughout except for in the bridge when the song’s movement is expressed a bit slower. This gives the listener a bit of breathing room and sort of acts as the climax of the song before the last chorus.
Notes: Cody wearing his work boots to the bar relates to the country audience as many country listeners are average people who work day to day jobs and wear average clothing. This hook would not resonate as well in, say, a pop or jazz song.
