Fresh A.I.R.: Chris Young

by Dawson Neal, Team SWPro on October 01, 2020

What is Fresh A.I.R.? It's a fresh new "Artist Insight Report" for the Songwriting Pro Community. If you want an artist to cut your song, it sure helps to know what they've cut in the past. Team SWPro does the research, you write the song!

Summary:
He has a very new sound that still leans into country roots instrumentation. I would call it mostly radio country over pop country, however he does have a few synthesized things. He loves an end-of-chorus payoff and using the chorus title more than once if not. He writes his own stuff, so a co-write is gonna be the best option for getting a cut.

Track: I’m Comin’ Over
Writers: Chris Young, Corey Crowder, Josh Hoge
Producer: Chris Young, Corey Crowder
PUL’D: slower ballad, but lively
Subject: He had a recent breakup but doesn’t want to give up on that relationship, and wants to go back over to her just like old times.
Music: electric guitar driven, not quite “wordy” but still faster speaking, Pop country
Notes: great payoff

Track: Drowning
Writers: Chris Young, Corey Crowder, Josh Hoge
Producer: Chris Young, Corey Crowder
PUL’D: ballad
Subject: He’s missing someone in his life who died, and is mourning that relationship being gone from his life. It has ups and downs but in that moment he’s drowning in the sadness.
Music: pop sounding track, 808 led, slower than a lot of the rest
Notes: another nice payoff in the chorus

Track: Raised on Country
Writers: Cary Barlowe, Chris Young, Corey Crowder
Producer: Chris Young, Corey Crowder
PUL’D: uptempo, summer anthem song
Subject: He uses a lot of country analogies and imagery to talk about how he was raised on country.
Music: Radio country, honky tonk sound but with a pop undertone, guitar driven
Notes:

Track: Tomorrow
Writers: Anthony Smith, Chris Young, Frank Myers
Producer: James Stroud
PUL’D: slower, ballad
Subject: He acknowledges that he and his girl are not good for each other, but that he’s going to pretend just this once that everything is fine, and tomorrow he’ll leave.
Music: traditional country sounding, guitar driven, wordier chorus
Notes: title is used a lot

Track: Losing Sleep
Writers: Chris DeStefano, Chris Young, Josh Hoge
Producer: Corey Crowder, Chris Young
PUL’D: uptempo but mellow
Subject: He feels a close connection to his significant other, and talks about how they seem to fall into each other when they are intimate.
Music: pop guitar driven, pop song sound with 808, chorus brings in country sounding electric guitar
Notes: another great payoff, seems to be a trend

Track: Hangin’ On
Writers: Chris Young, Corey Crowder, Josh Hoge
Producer: Chris Young, Corey Crowder
PUL’D: uptempo
Subject: He’s hanging on to everything his girl says and is so wrapped up in her and what she’s doing when they’re together.
Music: guitar melody driven, pop country, repetitive melody in chorus
Notes: hooky with the chorus being the way it is

Track: Aw Naw
Writers: Ashley Gorley, Chris DeStefano, Chris Young
Producer: James Stroud
PUL’D: uptempo, party/bar song
Subject: He and his boys were about to leave the bar but then things escalated and instead they had to stay and party some more.
Music: Gritty Western sounding song, Radio country, guitar driven
Notes: this one feels very different than the rest

Track: Gettin’ You Home
Writers: Chris Young, Corey Batten, Kent Blazy
Producer: James Stroud
PUL’D: slower, mellow
Subject: He and his girl are out for a date, but he just wants to get home and be intimate with her instead of dressing up and being out.
Music: traditional sounding instrumentation and melody, shuffle kind of song
Notes: sounds like a George Strait track
