TRANSCRIPT:

Today, I want to talk about about talent. And I'll just cut to the chase: talent doesn't mean a whole lot. Sorry. I mean, you can't throw a stick in Nashville without hitting somebody that was probably the most talented writer/artist in their hometown. And they're waiting tables. And most of them, that's all they're going in Nashville.

And there's no shame in that, of course, waiting tables. But what I mean is, talent alone doesn't get you further than that. That's not what's going to make the difference for you having a lot of success or having a little success or having no success. Because talent without hard work gets you just slightly better results than no talent at all.

Okay, so what makes difference between talent that makes it and talent that doesn't? Work ethic.

Because everybody's talented, alright? We're not impressed by that. Great, you got some chops, you have some natural ability, that's fine. But that is not enough. You need to be a student of the game. If you want songwriting to be your business, you need to treat it like a business.

You know what? Even LeBron James has a coach. And he has a whole lot of natural talent, right? But he also takes coaching. He also works at it as a business. He looks at it going, "what is my craft? How can I improve my craft and not just rely on my natural abilities?" How far would he go? If he were like, "Naw, I'm not gonna practice. I'm just gonna show up at the game and do what I do. And just rely on my talent that God gave me. He wouldn't get that far. Cuz everybody in the NBA is talented.

We're all talented in the music business. So what's going to make the difference is your work ethic. And the mind you have for it, looking at it as a business and saying, Where are my opportunities? How can I grow my craft? How can I grow what I do, as a creative, as a writer, apply those skills, and become world class ? Because if you're not working to get better, you're going to get beat out by another talented person who outworks you. And that's the truth.

This has been 3 Minutes & The Truth.

God bless,

Brent
